Central Asia Students Prepare for Economics Olympiad Finals
Eighteen of Central Asia’s most promising young economics students came together in Almaty, Kazakhstan, this June for EFI’s Regional Economics Olympiad Bootcamp, an intensive week of academic preparation ahead of the International Economics Olympiad Finals in Greece this August.
Hosted at Narxoz University, the bootcamp welcomed students representing four EFI partner countries for five days of collaborative learning, practical activities, and exam preparation designed to strengthen both their economic understanding and problem-solving skills before they compete on the international stage.

Throughout the week, students participated in lectures, discussions, quizzes, games, and interactive learning activities led by experienced instructors. Regular knowledge checks and collaborative exercises encouraged participants to deepen their understanding of key economic concepts while learning alongside peers from across the region.
Beyond academic preparation, the bootcamp provided an opportunity for students from different countries to build friendships, exchange ideas, and experience the value of international collaboration.
“Before I came here, I thought I’d feel like a stranger among people from different countries. But everyone was so welcoming. It made me much more confident and open to new challenges.”

As part of the programme, participants also visited the National Bank of Kazakhstan, where they met with the Deputy Governor and gained valuable insights into the role of a central bank and the practical application of economic policy. EFI extends its thanks to the National Bank for hosting the group and supporting this important learning opportunity.

The week concluded with a visit to Shymbulak Mountain Resort, where students and coordinators took part in team-building activities and enjoyed time together outside the classroom, further strengthening the relationships formed throughout the programme.
EFI is grateful to Narxoz University for hosting this year’s bootcamp and for its continued partnership in supporting economics education across Central Asia.
The Regional Economics Olympiad Bootcamp forms an important part of EFI’s commitment to developing the next generation of economically literate leaders. By combining rigorous academic preparation with collaboration across borders, the programme helps equip students with the knowledge, confidence, and international perspective they need to represent their countries at the International Economics Olympiad and beyond.
“Five years ago, I never thought I’d be able to take part in something international. I thought I was limited to my region, or maybe just Uzbekistan. But now I’m here in Kazakhstan, preparing for an international stage. I’ve realised there really are no borders.”
Chalkanissa, A student from Uzbekistan
